Grandmother Realizes a Long-Time Dream with a New Home for her Family

Mrs. Mot of Ben Tre Province, Vietnam, is 65 years old and helping to care for her two young grandchildren. Their father, Mrs. Mot’s only son, died of a stroke when he was just 40. Mrs. Mot’s daughter-in-law, a niece, and a nephew also live with them in a poorly constructed home that floods during the rainy season. Their income is primarily from Mrs. Mot and her daughter-in-law’s seasonal work of grooming coconut leaves, but the amount is barely enough to cover living expenses. The family had to take out a loan from the government to pay for the children’s schooling.

We asked Mrs. Mot about her wishes for the family, and she said she hoped to have a small amount of money with which she could repair the house, but that she was afraid she would die before ever realizing that dream.

Thanks to the generosity of AREAA Twin Cities and other supporters, Kids Promise was able to construct an entirely new home for this deserving family. The home is complete with a concrete base and columns, a cool tin roof, an enameled tile floor and colored walls, as well as a few basic pieces of furniture like a desk and wardrobe.

Relatives, local government officials, and neighbors joined the family and representatives of Kids Promise to celebrate the new home in July 2020. Mrs. Mot and her family will be safer during the rainy season and their quality of life will significantly improve, giving the children a better environment for focusing on their education.
