First Home of 2020 Presented to Family of Seven
The family of Mr. Huynh Van Dieu Em and Mrs. Mai Thi Phuong were the first recipients of a Kids Promise home in 2020. Previously living in an unstable cottage, their new home provides more security, safety, and comfort during the rainy season. The celebration of the new home and a new year included many of the family’s relatives and neighbors.
Mr. Dieu Em and Mrs. Phuong have three boys and two girls ranging in age from 4th grade down to just a few weeks old. Mr. Dieu Em was given a 30m2 parcel of land upon which he built a leaf house to accommodate the seven-person family. Mrs. Phuong cares for the children and the home, and occasionally goes to the field to catch fish and snails to sell and earn money.
Mr. Dieu Em is living far from home working as a fisherman. The total income is around 5 million per month, which is not enough to cover basic needs. The children’s clothes are donated by neighbors and the family borrows the children’s school books. There is not enough money for daily meals.
With a new home, the family is safer from the elements like wind and rain, and the children have a better environment for concentrating on their school work.
